Socially Themselves

I ran across an interesting discussion on Mothering.com started by a mom who is considering homeschool and worried about socialization. I don’t want to go into exhaustive detail on how often socialization comes up as a justification for public schools but I especially loved one poster’s comment…

My kids are not socially awkward.  They are socially themselves.

And her later summary…

One of the main reasons I homeschool is BECAUSE of socialization.

Socially themselves, I LOVE that!

I saw a bumper sticker once that summed it up for me. It said:

    “Caution: Un-socialized Homeschool Kids.
They haven’t been beaten up, teased, bullied, shot at, evacuated, locked down, terrorized, expelled, or bombed.”

People often forget to mention that socialization isn’t always a positive thing.
